Alessandra Lai is an Italian photographer currently based in London. She is best known for her performance photography, which often features naked or semi-naked women in public places.
Lai’s work is often described as “sexy” or “sensual”, but she says that her intention is not to titillate her viewers. Rather, she wants to create a space for women to feel empowered and confident in their own bodies.
“My work is about celebrating the female body in all its forms,” Lai says. “I want to show that women can be strong, beautiful, and sexual creatures, without being objectified or sexualised.”
Lai’s performance photography has been featured in a number of publications, including Vogue, The Guardian, and i-D. She has also exhibited her work at a number of galleries and museums, including the Tate Modern and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
